Paine is the name of the one who discovered the towers. I was there about two years ago and it is an amazing place. I took a tour van from Punta Arenas for about $60. Chile is an awesome country – seems very safe and clean. Flights to Punta Arenas which is five hours south of Torres del Paine run around $500 from Santiago. I plan to go back sometime this year.

It is nice because of the falls and dining room. Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon should be on this list and it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to stay there like the other properties. Built during “The New Deal” the architecture is awesome. Try and get “The Roosevelt Room.” All rooms are welcoming even if nearly 100 years old, dining and amenities are terrific and great skiing is right outside the lodge. The exterior shots of “The Shining” were filmed there.

A far more beautiful, far more interesting spot to stay. (Expensive yes, but none of these resorts are cheap.)

It was absolutely magnificent!! However a view like this is very unusual, out tour guide was amazed that we could see the towers as we had a clear day without howling winds, this is not so far from Anarctica. On a clear day, one of the most stunning sights in the world. When in Calafate, go to see the many glaciers there especially Perito Moren which advances 4M/day, by van tour. Also go north by bus or car to Chalten Argentina and hike (trek) to the base of Mt. Fitz Roy and Torres del ? for another great treat. We bussed north for about 4 weeks and stopped at many incredible places and on up to Bariloche. Go to Mt. Tronnadore (thunder) glacier for its booming sounds and waterfalls. Best trip of our lives.
